OFF theUNIT

Nurse Education. Strategy. Calm.

About Charllie

I learned this the hard way. You don’t have to.

I’m Charllie Bongolan, MSN, RN, FNP-BC. More than a decade at the bedside across Sub-ICU, transplant, telemetry and PCU, float pool and charge shifts, plus years of precepting the nurses who came after me.

Off the Unit is everything I wish someone had handed me in my first year.

Where this started

For a long time I thought being a good nurse meant never sitting down.

I was busy. I was moving. I was always doing something. And I still finished most shifts feeling like I had been one step behind the whole day.

Then I started paying attention to the nurses on my unit who never looked rushed. They were not faster than me. They were not smarter than me. They had a system. They decided what the shift was going to look like before the shift decided for them.

That was the entire difference. And nobody had ever taught it to me, because it is not in the curriculum. Nursing school teaches you how to care for a patient. It does not teach you how to run twelve hours.

I wasn’t behind. I just didn’t have a system.

The background

More than a decade at the bedside, and what each part of it taught me.

Every one of these shaped a piece of what I teach now.

Sub-ICU / Transplant

High acuity patients where small changes matter and nothing can be missed.

Telemetry and PCU

Reading a trend early, so you act before it becomes a rapid response.

Float pool

Walking onto an unfamiliar unit taught me how to quickly figure out what matters, adapt, and keep moving.

Charge nurse

Seeing the whole floor at once and deciding what actually comes first.

Preceptor

Teaching new nurses, which is how I learned what genuinely helps and what only sounds good.

MSN, FNP-BC

The provider side of the conversation, which changed the way I give report for good.

What I believe

Calm is not a personality trait.

Calm gets built

Through strategy, anticipation and organization, not temperament.

You are not behind

You were never handed the system.

Confidence follows competence

Not the reverse.

Progress matters more than perfection.

Who I work with

The nurses I understand best.

  • New graduate nurses in the first year.
  • Nurses recently off orientation and suddenly on their own.
  • Nurses changing specialties and starting over on an unfamiliar unit.
  • Any nurse who is competent and still leaves every shift feeling behind.

If you recognized yourself in more than one of those, you are exactly who this was built for.

What this is

Off the Unit: education, strategy and mentorship.

Off the Unit is where nurses learn the things there’s never enough time to teach on the unit, then take them back to their practice.

Education

The workbook, and the tools that come with it.

Strategy

Systems for prioritizing, anticipating and organizing a twelve-hour shift.

Strategy Sessions

One-to-one sessions built around your shifts, your challenges, and what you're actually working through.

Before you book

Wherever you are right now, there is a place to start.
